Out of this World Influences

Hey Film Folk,

This week I’ve been travelling around the UK a lot. The best part of this was travelling to Liverpool (birth place of the Beatles) to see SPACE (my favourite band) play. I’d produced and directed a few of their backdrop videos, so it was great to see them played in front of a live audience.

SPACE are a really important part of my life, they’ve been a key creative driver for me since I was 15. I consider them to be up there with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino in my list of influences.

SPACE are very cinematic, their tracks sound like bizarre B-movies and nobody else sounds anything like them. Tracks have covered topics such as:

*A neighbourhood being threatened with extinction
*Two lovers tragically holding up a grocery store
*Tom Jones’ back catalogue saving a couple from killing each other
*A man stranded 20,000,000 miles from Earth
*A girl in love with a boy in a bodybag
*A Mutant 50ft Kebab attacking a high street

The style and diversity of these tracks always got my creative juices flowing. When everyone else was producing typical, dull love songs, SPACE were creating these brilliant and bizarre hits.

I think that’s a great lesson for all creatives, that you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. You can open your mind to creating content that other people wouldn’t consider, or dare.

That’s why I’ve always found SPACE to be such a creative force for me. Who inspires you? I’d love to hear about it.

They have an amazing new album coming out soon, and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to be AMAZING…
